VISITORS FLOCK TO MOUNT ST HELENS DURING ERUPTION ANNIVERSARY.
Luke Madill of Abbottsford, British Columbia looks over a diaroma of Mount St. Helens at the Johnston Ridge Observatory on May 11, 2000. Some 700,000 visitors are expected to visit the National Monument this year, the 20th anniverary of the May 18, 1980 eruption where 57 people in the blast zone perished from the 650-mph explosion of ash, rock and gases that tore apart the Northeast face of the mountain. The 1980 eruption took off the top 1,400 feet of this still active 8,356 foot Cascade Mountain volcano. apb/Photo by Anthony P.
