Ariane 5 ECA V164 rocket blasts off with record payload from Kourou launch site.
An upgraded Ariane-5 rocket blasts off from Kourou in French Guiana, late February 12, 2005 before successfully placing into orbit two satellites, two years after a first attempt ended in failure. The rocket carried a XTAR-EUR satellite which will provide military and governmental communications for Spain and the United States and a SLOSHSAT satellite, an experimental payload that will study how fluids behave in space.
