FILE PHOTO OF WINDSOR ABDICATION DESK
FILE PHOTO 9FEB98 - The desk on which the Duke of Windsor signed papers in 1936 abdicating the throne of England in order to marry the woman he loved sold for $415,000 at the Sotheby's auction February 21. The so-called "abdication desk," a George III mahogany table circa 1755, had been estimated by Sotheby's to sell for between $30,000 and $50,000, but rapid bidding sent the price over $200,000 within 30 seconds. The desk is displayed at Sotheby's in New York on February 9.
