Shaman Ertechi Kleshevas (L) performs a healing ritual as a visitor,
who turned for help, stands by in the Kyrlyk settlemant in Gorny Altai
mountains in Siberia. Villagers in Kyrlyk say Ertechi, in her late
fifties and a descendant of an ancient and powerfull clan of Altai
shamans, can cure desease and curses, conjure up or banish plague, and
explain the inexplicable. Healing rituals, practised by dozens of
shamans in the old days, are newly popular in Russias Gorny Altai where
hospitals remain scarce even today and roads often amount to no more
than a track across a windswept plateua. Picture taken June 10, 2003.
