Ermera, East Timor
FOR RELEASE WITH STORY BC-TIMOR-COFFEE - World Bank agriculturist James Fox (L) examines a coffee plant with an East Timorese farmer at a coffee plantation in the foggy hills of Ermera, East Timor's coffee growing highlands. An agricultural team of a World Bank led the operation assessing the newly liberated territory and how to rebuild it. The 1999 coffee crop was to be a bumper 10,000 tonnes, boosted by drenching La Nina rains, but in the aftermath of the post ballot violence, industry experts have pegged output at 8,000 tonnes with an estimated value of U.S. $20-22 million.
