A member of military staff of the fort of Dailly in the southern canton
of Valais, Switzerland, explains the functioning of a 105 millimetre
cannon on September 17, 2002. Neutral Switzerlands military intends to
sale parts of its weapons as the new-look army scales down for the post
cold-Cold war era. This is a jolting but inevitable turn of events for
the army, whose central role in Swiss society is being undermined by an
outbreak of peace and employers growing reluctance to let valuable
staff disappear into uniform for weeks at a time. (TO MATCH GENERAL
