The Baba Merzoug cannon is seen at the Arsenal of Brest
The Baba Merzoug cannon, also known as "La Consulaire" (The Consular), is seen at the Arsenal of Brest, in western France December 3, 2011. The cannon was cast in 1542 to defend the Bay of Algiers within a range of 5km (3 miles) and was used to protect the capital of Algeria for two centuries. It was seized in 1830 during the fall of Algiers and transferred to Brest. According to local media, the cannon could be returned to Algeria in 2012 to mark the country's 50th anniversary of independence from France. REUTERS/Stephane Mahe (FRANCE - Tags: SOCIETY MILITARY)
