A demonstrating French gendarme flashes a victory sign after being
blocked by CRS riot police (R) on Paris' Avenue de la Grande Armee near
the Arc de Triomphe, December 7, 2001. Several hundred gendarmes,
demonstrating for improved working conditions, facing mounting crime
and insecurity, paraded in their vehicles through Paris today. They
were prevented by the rior police from parading down Paris' famed
Champs Elysees. Similar demonstrations by France's para-military
gendarmes have been taking place throughout France this week.
