On the eve of the first departures for summer holidays French gendarmes are posted on the side of known road accident sites, June 29 south-western France. The French Transport ministry, trying to curb the rise in deadly car accidents, called up about 20,000 policemen and gendarmes to watch the 15 million motorists expected to cross France in the next few days.
