FRENCH RIOT POLICEMEN ATTEMPT TO REMOVE REFUGEES FROM CALAIS STREETS.
French riot policemen attempt to remove refugees who were sleeping on
the streets of Calais to a reception centre because of the low
temperatures, early December 11, 2002. More than 200 refugees live in
the streets of Calais and sleep outside in plummeting winter
temperatures. France and Britain agreed that the nearby controversial
Sangatte refugee camp, which houses around 300 Afghans and Kurds, will
close in December providing Britain implements legislation to
discourage illegal immigration. REUTERS/Pascal Rossignol
