OIL-COVERED SEAL RESCUED FORM POLLUTED WATERS IN FRANCE.
Municipal workers tend to an oil-covered seal which was rescued from polluted waters at Bretignolles sur Mer on France's western Vendee coast January 4. The seal will be taken for treatment at the Oceanographic center in nearby la Rochelle. Oil slicks continue to wash up on France's western seaboard following the December 12 1999 break-up and sinking of the Maltese-registered oil tanker 'Erika' in the Bay of Biscay.
