Aschau, Germany
Girls from the little Bavarian village of Schleching, dressed in traditional Bavarian clothes, sit on the 'stolen' maypole on their way to bring it back to Aschau near lake Chiemsee May 1, 2007, where they will put it up. The tradition goes back to the 16th century, when maypoles were communal symbols, being erected as group activities by a parish. The poles were often the focus of rivalries between villages, which were stealing one anothers' poles. REUTERS/Michaela Rehle (GERMANY)
