Claudia Roehling owner of the nuclear bunker of the federal German state of North Rhine-Westphalia stands in the telex room in Kall-Urft near the German-Belgian border and some 60 km (37 miles) south west of the German city of Cologne March 29, 2009. The bunker was built in the cold war period from 1962 to 1966 by the government of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) at the price of ten million German Marks (about five million euros). It was designed to supply 300 people of the administration and government of NRW over the period of 30 days following a nuclear strike. The government of NRW spent one million German Marks (about 500,000 euros) per year to maintain the bunker until it was closed in 1993 following the fall of the iron curtain.
