Men in traditional Bavarian clothes erect a maypole on Germany's highest mountain, the 2,962 metre (9,718 feet) Zugspitze in front of the panorama of the Alps near the southern Bavarian resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen May 1, 2009.The tradition dates back to the 16th century, when maypoles were communal symbols, being erected as group activities by a parish.
