STOIBER AND GOPPEL LEAVE A CDU BOARD MEETING IN MAGDEBURG.
Edmund Stoiber (L), chairman of Bavaria's Christian Social Union party
(CSU) and CSU secretary general Thomas Goppel leave a board meeting of
the CSU's sister party Christian Democratic Union party (CDU) in the
eastern German city of Magdeburg January 12, 2002. Stoiber, 60, the
experienced governor of Bavaria will lead the conservative opposition
parties in their effort to defeat Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's of the
Social Democrats in September general elections. Stoiber won the
nomination after the leader of the largest opposition party, Angela
Merkel, withdrew her bid, ending a two-way battle over the
conservatives' direction marked by intrigue and backbiting. Merkel said
she would help Stoiber run the campaign. REUTERS/Alexandra Winkler
