STOIBER GIVES A TV INTERVIEW IN MAGDEBURG.
Edmund Stoiber, chairman of Bavaria's Christian Social Union party
(CSU) is seen through a window as he gives a TV interview following a
board meeting of the CSU's sister party Christian Democratic Union
party (CDU) in Magdeburg January 12, 2002. Stoiber, 60, the experienced
governor of Bavaria will lead the conservative opposition parties in
their effort to defeat Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's of the Social
Democrats in September general elections. Stoiber won the nomination
after the leader of the largest opposition party, Angela Merkel,
withdrew her bid, ending a two-way battle over the conservatives'
direction marked by intrigue and backbiting. Merkel said she would help
Stoiber run the campaign. REUTERS/Alexandra Winkler REUTERS
