Schulze-Esking pig farmer and CDU member
Werner Schulze-Esking, a member of Germany's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Billerbeck poses with his three dogs at his home in the western city of Billerbeck August 15, 2013. The 62-year-old pig farmer joined the CDU at the age of 22 and served in the Billerbeck town council for 20 years. He said in an interview that his involvement in farming has prompted him to become a member of the conservative CDU. "My decision to go into politics stems from the desire to take part in the shaping of rural life," he said. While insisting on his conservative values, he concedes that his party cannot ignore certain developments in the country. "Society is changing, take the issue over same-sex marriage, which I personally don't condone. But this is a societal evolution and the CDU has to play along, otherwise we are no longer a major party at home in the centre of society." But he is clear on his party's coalition options. While the FDP or the SPD were "thinkable" as partners, a coalition with "the Greens is impossible. A coalition with them would be a reason to resign my seat," he said.
