HELMUT KOHL LEAVES HOME IN BERLIN.
Helmut Kohl, former German Chancellor and Christian Democratic (CDU) chairman looks down as he leaves his home in Berlin's Grunewald district January 19. Kohl, modern Germany's longest serving chancellor, resigned January 18 as honorary chairman of his Christian Democratic Union after the party issued him an ultimatum to clear up a financial scandal or quit. Kohl, a conservative who held power for 16 years until 1998, said in a statement that it was a hard decision but that he was in no position to meet the party's demand that he name donors from whom he accepted illegal secret funds.
