People light candles on the eve of World AIDS Day for the victims of the HIV virus that causes AIDS in Berlin November 30, 2004. World AIDS Day has been held each year on December 1, since 1988, the year when health ministers from around the world first convened a summit on the HIV/AIDS epidemic. A report from UNAIDS, the joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, released last week shows the number of adults and children living with HIV reached 39.4 million in 2004.
