Women work at the Ramirez fish canning factory in Matosinhos
Women work at the Ramirez fish canning factory in Matosinhos, Portugal February 12, 2018. Portugal’s Ramirez canning company touts itself as the oldest cannery in the world. The company was born in 1853 and a little more than a decade later started canning tuna, which were then abundant along the Portuguese coast. Today, five generations of Ramirezes later, they operate a state-of-the-art canning factory in Matosinhos shaped like a can of fish. Today, the company also cans anchovies, sardines, mackerel, cod and other species. Much of the fish is local, but it now has to import fish as well. It exports the canned fish the world over.
