PM OF NEW ZEALAND CLARK IS ESCORTED BY MAORI WARRIORS IN GREEK ISLAND OF CRETE.
Prime Minister of New Zealand Helen Clark (C) is escorted by Maori warriors as she arrives at a monument at the Cretan village of Galatas off the town of Chania where celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Crete are taking place May 18, 2001. In 1941 hundreds of German planes droned across the Mediterranean coastline, disgourging thousands of crack paratroops in an airborne invasion at the Greek island the like of which had not been seen before, and has not been seen since. A few hundred Allied veterans of the battle will gather on the island with their local counterparts this weekend to mark the anniversary with parades, wreath layings and a reenactment.
