GREEK ORTHODOX FAITHFUL PRAY IN FRONT OF "AXION ESTI" ICON IN ATHENS.
Greek Orthodox faithful pray in front of the "Axion Esti" icon, a seventh century icon depicting the Virgin Mary holding a baby Christ October 18. The rarely-seen icon brought down from Mount Athos to lend faith to Greece's earthquake victims. The icon, whose name means "It is worthy to bless thee" is believed to perform miracles. In 980, a group of monks claimed they saw the Archangel Gabriel while praying in front of the icon.
