TWO ITALIAN POLICEMEN PEER THROUGH A MESH BARRIER AS THEY STAND GUARD
INSIDE THE 'RED ZONE' IN GENOA'S OLD TOWN PRIOR TO THE G8 SUMMIT.
Two Italian policemen peer through a steel mesh barrier July 19, 2001
from within the 'Red Zone' set up by the authorities to seal off
Genoa's old town to protect a weekend Group of Eight summit against an
onslaught by anti-globalisation demonstrators. With concrete barricades
and steel mesh fences, the police closed off a key-shaped 'red zone'
including the 13th century Ducal Palace where the G8 leaders will meet
and the old port where most of them will sleep on board a luxury ocean
liner.
