FIVE EFFIGIES HANG FROM A CRANE IN GENOA TO PROTEST STATE EXECUTIONS IN
IRAN.
Five effigies, hands bound behind their backs, hang from a crane in a
Genoa square July 19, 2001 as part of a protest planned by thousands of
demonstrators to greet world leaders in the Italian city. About 120,000
anti-globalization demonstrators from hundreds of protest groups,
including environmentalists, debt cancellation campaigners and human
rights activists have gathered to oppose the G8 summit. Host nation
Italy is mounting a massive security operation, pouring in 15,000 armed
police and troops to ensure the leaders of the United States, Russia,
Japan, Germany, France, Italy, Britain and Canada can discuss global
issues in safety on July 20-22.
