Fermin Felipe Solano Barillas attends his sentence at the court in Chimaltenango
Fermin Felipe Solano Barillas, also known as "Teniente David" (Lieutenant David) during the internal armed conflict, attends his sentence at the court in Chimaltenango, west of Guatemala City, July 4, 2014. The court of Chimaltenango on Friday sentenced Solano Barillas to 90 years in prison for his role in the murder of 22 villagers in El Aguacate and San Andres Itzapa in the Chimaltenango region, during the 1988 internal armed conflict. The slaughter occurred between November 22 and 25, 1988 when a group of 10 alleged guerrillas members of the Organization of the People in Arms, (ORPA), murdered 22 men after accusing them of collaborating with the army. This is the first legal process taking place against a guerrilla member from the 36-year internal armed conflict in the country.
