Pope John Paul II blesses two Mayan men during a mass in Guatemala City
July 30, 2002. Pope John Paul II defended the rights of Central
America's native peoples and poor on Tuesday, saying they had every
right to live in justice and peace and see respect for their cultures.
The pope, on the penultimate step of his 11-day tour, looked somewhat
tired but spoke in a mostly strong voice to an ecstatic crowd of some
500,000 at a sprawling horse-racing track in Guatemala's capital.
