WORKER CHECKS A DOG AT SOCIETY FOR PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS IN
HONG KONG.
A worker checks a mongrel dog, waiting to be adopted, at the Society
for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Hong Kong, January
4, 2002. Fed up with spending more time killing than saving lives, SPCA
aims to abolish the practice of mercy killing of unwanted pets. Pet
abandonment is a serious problem in the city due to its notoriously
cramped housing conditions. The organization and the government
together pick up around 35,000 abandoned animals a year but only a
fraction of them are fit enough to be put up for adoption.
