HONG KONG TELECOM WORKERS PROTEST IN HONG KONG.
More than 300 Hongkong Telecom workers listen to a protest speech as they demonstrate outside the company's headquarters in Hong Kong November 20. Workers of the territory's biggest tele-communication company, which employed about 13,500 staffers, protested against a proposed package that trading its standard 13th month of salary paid to workers for a bonus scheme in 1999. Hongkong Telecom posted an interim net profit of HK$6.1 billion in the six months to September 30, up 1.4 percent from HK$6.01 billion profit in the same year-ago period, but the company said it saw a difficult operating environment for the remainder of the fiscal year, and competition would intensify as communications markets liberalised.
