Flood-affected villagers queue to get medical help from an army doctor
in the village of Patali Pon, 110 km northeast of Bubaneshwar in the
eastern Indian state of Orissa, July 22, 2001. Officials said water
levels in most rivers were now falling, but large amounts of stagnant
water remained. Hundreds of villages were still surrounded by muddy
waters. Floods triggered by heavy monsoon rains have left 45 people
dead, marooned 600,000 villagers and heaped misery on nearly seven
million people.
