AN INDIAN PARAMILITARY TROOPER BEATS A CURFEW VIOLATOR IN IMPHAL.
An Indian paramilitary trooper beats a curfew violator in Imphal, capital of the northeastern state of Manipur, June 21, 2001. Thousands of people stepped out of their homes for a brief two-hour lifting of the curfew for the first time since it was imposed on Monday. The unrest in mountain-locked state was triggered by a federal government decision last week to widen a four-year-old ceasefire with rebels in neighbouring Nagaland to include parts of Manipur and two other states where Nagas live.
