More than 10,000 fishermen, residing in shanties in the heart of Bombay's financial district, earn less than 1000 Indian Rupees (less than $22) a month per person. Using traditional wooden boats, some fishing expeditions with larger teams could last over a month. The fishing skills are passed through the generations, with the sons often helping their fathers instead of going to schools.
