TRADITIONAL INDIAN GYMNASTICS IN BOMBAY....
British circus artist Satya Cotton-Lapham, 24, performs the rope
variation of a traditional form of Indian gymnastics, known as
"Mallakhamb" (gymnast's pole), in Bombay May 27,2003. Mallakhamb, which
can be traced back to the 12th century in India, combines aggressive
body control and the gentleness of a dancer to attain physical fitness.
However, Mallkhamb is on the decline owing to the commercialisation of
other sports. Lapham is student of Mallakhamb in Bombay. REUTERS/Roy
