INDIAN POLICE FRISK A PEDESTRIAN NEAR RED FORT IN NEW DELHI.
Indian police frisk a pedestrian near the Red Fort in New Delhi, August 14, 2000. India's security forces were put on "Red Alert" on the eve of the Independence Day anniversary on Monday against a backdrop of threats from Kashmir and the northeast. The August 15 anniversary of the end of British rule in 1947 is always an occasion for high security, but this year the concern has increased after Kashmir's worst night of terror in a decade-long rebellion and a devastating car bombing.
