VILLAGERS MAN A ROADBLOCK ON THE INDONESIAN ISLAND OF BINTAN.
A resident of Lagoi, holding a spike, demands the identification from a passing motorist at a road block in Bintan island, near Singapore January 18. The roadblock was set up to prevent undercover policemen and other 'provocateurs' from disrupting the demonstrations held daily since last Saturday at the entrance leading to Pulau Bintan Wisata Lagoi, a beach resort owned by Indonesian and Singapore companies. A policeman on Monday said the demonstrations were linked to land-rights claims and some of the protesters carried parangs - large traditional knives.
