Newly arrived Afghan refugees sit on the ground in a detention camp for refugees in the southern Iranian town of Zahedan near the border with Afghanistan and Pakistan June 19, 2001. Afghanistan currently faces perhaps the most disastrous humanitarian crisis in the entire world, its people crossing the border every day seeking refuge in neighbouring Iran. According to the United Nations, Iran is home to 1.5 million Afghan and more than 500,000 Iraqis. Today is the World Refugee Day, designated by the U.N. General Assembly last year to commemorate the 1951 Refugee Convention, the accord setting up the legal foundation for refugee rights.
