SDLP LEADER JOHN HUME ANNOUNCES INTENTION TO RESIGN AS PARTY LEADER IN
BELFAST.
Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) leader John Hume announces
his intention to resign as party leader during a news conference at
Stormont in Belfast, September 17, 2001. Hume a winner of the Nobel
Peace Prize for his role in helping to achieve a peace settlement in
the British ruled province, has cited health reasons as the main
influence in his decision to step down, but he said he would stay in
politics as a member of the British and European parliaments.
