A MAN WALKS PAST A LARGE BONFIRE BUILT CLOSE TO THE SHANKILL ROAD AREA
OF BELFAST.
A man walks past a large bonfire built close to the Shankill Road area
of west Belfast, Northern Ireland, July 10, 2003, ahead of celebrations
which will take place on Friday and Saturday. As Northern Ireland
approaches the peak of the volatile marching season, there is cautious
hope that a quiet summer on the streets could help revive the stalled
peace process. The night of July 11 and morning of July 12 are part of
celebrations marking the victory of Protestant King William of Orange
over Catholic King James at the battle of the Boyne in 1690.
