Sharon, the 74-year-old leader of the right-wing Likud party which won
the general election on January 28, 2003. Sharon's Likud party swept to
victory in Israel's general election on Tuesday and dealt a crushing
defeat to the leftist parties that pursued peace deals with the
Palestinians.
