PRESIDENT EZER WEIZMAN FACES PRESSURE TO RESIGN OVER FINANCIAL GIFTS.
Israeli President Ezer Weizman, photogaphed January 3 during a meeting with the visiting Romanian president, is facing increasing pressure to resign over allegations he received large, undisclosed financial gifts from a French millionaire. Two Israeli papers have demanded January 4 that the famed combat pilot turned peacemaker and stateman step down three years before the end of his second five-year term as president. Allegations report that Weizman accepted more than $450,000 between 1988 and 1993 while he was a member of parliament and a minister.
