D'Alema a former communist emerged as the frontrunner to try to form Italy's 56th government since World War Two October 15. President Oscar Luigi Scalfaro had asked former Prime Minister Romano Prodi to try and form a new government following the collapse of the centre-left government in a confidence vote last week, but Prodi admitted defeat on Thursday. D'Alema is the leader of Italy's largest party, the Democrats of the Left.
