Bierdel and Schmidt of Germany's Cap Anamur relief group await verdict at a court in Agrigento
Elias Bierdel (L) and Stefan Schmidt of Germany's Cap Anamur relief group await a verdict on charges of aiding illegal immigration at a court in Agrigento October 7, 2009. An Italian court on Wednesday acquitted three members of a German charity charged with promoting illegal immigration after rescuing 37 African migrants adrift in the Mediterranean. The court on the southern Italian island of Sicily cleared Bierdel, director of the relief organisation Cap Anamur, and the German captain and Russian first mate of its rescue vessel of all charges, in a boost to rights groups fighting a European crackdown on illegal migration.
