Giuseppe poses in front of Gorreto in Liguria
Giuseppe, 86, poses in front of Gorreto in Liguria November 29, 2013. Italy's population has been ageing for decades, with Italians living longer and having fewer babies. Gorreto, where almost all the town's residents are over 60, is a stark example of Italy's demographic decline. Riace, a small village in the poor region of Calabria is another place that has seen its population shrink dramatically. Many of the village's former residents left in search of better opportunities elsewhere in Italy or abroad. The mayor of Riace, Domenico Lucano has introduced a scheme to encourage immigrants to come to Riace and breathe new life into the village. Picture taken November 29, 2013.
