CLERK HOLDS A MORTADELLA IN AN ITALIAN DELICATESSEN.
19JAN2000 FILE PHOTO - Gianni Pieretti, a clerk at Bologna's Tamburni delicatessen, smiles as he holds up one of the house specialties, a 12 kilogram Mortadella. Although this Italian city has given birth to a host of delicious food, its name is synonymous in the U.S. for a pale pink sandwich meat which Americans pronounce baloney, but bears only slight resemblance to its noble ancestor, the mortadella sausage. Bologna-based food companies will resume exports of mortadella to the U.S. starting February 9 following a 20-year ban.
