A VIEW OF CITRON PLANTATIONS IN THE HILLS OF SANTA MARIA DEL CEDRO IN
SOUTHERN ITALY.
A view of citron plantations in the hills of Santa Maria del Cedro,
southern Italy, August 7, 2003. Rabbis from around the world have been
coming to the southern Italian region of Calabria every August for
centuries, to choose citrons, the fruit of cedar trees, grown in
villages along the Tirreno sea coast. The citrons are one of the 'four
species' which are used by Jewish people in the Jewish Festival of
Sukkoth (Tabernacles) which is celebrated between the end of September
and October each year. The area where villages such as Santa Maria del
Cedro or Marcellina are located is also known as the Cedars Riviera.
