A thermogram image of the capsized Costa Concordia cruise ship which ran aground off the west coast of Italy, is displayed on a laptop at the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Florence headquartered at Giglio island February 11, 2012. According to Professor Filippo Catani, this is a very complex and fairly unique monitoring system made up of ten different methods, all in real time and everything is interconnected and integrated. It is the first case probably in the world where one such big ship is monitored since the beginning of the salvaging operations.
