Demonstraters celebrate in Ivory Coast's second city Bouake, October 24, 2000 after hearing reports that Socialist Laurent Gbagbo had claimed victory in Ivory Coast's presidential election and plans to form a government. [Despite Gbagbo's lead in partial results published on Monday, military ruler General Robert Guei also claimed victory, prompting Gbagbo's supporters to take to the streets, some wearing red bandannas. Troops opened fire in Ivory Coast on Tuesday after thousands of supporters of opposition leader Laurent Gbagbo took to the streets, accusing the ruling junta of robbing him of a presidential election victory. Guei declared a state of emergency until Sunday and imposed an overnight curfew from 9 a.m. (0900 GMT) until 6 a.m. (0600 GMT) also until Sunday. ]
