People pray at Meiji Shrine in Tokyo at the start of the new year January 1. Japanese people visit shinto shrines and buddhist temples to pray for family's health, growth and development of property all over the country at the start of the year. About 3.5 million visitors are expected to visit Meji Shrine in the first three days of the year.
