A broker slouches in his trading booth at the Tokyo Stock Exchange where shares dropped August 17, closing below the psychologically significant 15,000 level. Domestic concerns over banks and economic recession were heightened by growing fears that global stock markets may suffer around-the-clock sales, traders said. Shares fell 2.18 percent or 329.27 points to close at 14,794.66 after losing over three percent earlier in the afternoon.
