FORMER UNITED NATIONS UNDERSECRETARY GENERAL AKASHI LEAVES PRIME MINISTER OBUCHI'S OFFICIAL RESIDENCE IN TOKYO.
Former United Nations undersecretary general Yasushi Akashi leaves Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi's official residence after meeting with Obuchi in Tokyo February 18. Akashi bowed to pressure from Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party and said he would run in April's high-profile race for the governorship of Tokyo. "I have made life-or-death decisions at the U.N. in the past, but this is also a most difficult decision," the 68-year-old Akashi said.
