NEWLY-DEVELOPED ROBOTS UNVEILED BY NEC IN KAWASAKI.
Newly-developed robot R100 lights up as it says "hello" while receiving a pat on its head with fellow robots by NEC Corporation engineers Toshihiro Nishizawa and Nobuyuki Yamashita at NEC's Incubation Center in Kawasaki, west of Tokyo August 26. NEC says, the prototype robot is the first of its kind in the world that can identify objects and faces and offer a greeting, as well as being able to control other household electronic equipment via voice command, using its infrared rays and video through its built-in cameras. NEC hopes to market the robot by the year 2001.
